1. Advocated for FY25 funding in the Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related agencies appropriations bill for the Reentry Employment Opportunities program in the Department of Labor's Employment & Training Administration. 2. Advocated for FY25 funding in the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related agencies appropriations bill for the Second Chance Act program in the Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance.
Provided input on the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) reauthorization bill related to the section that would codify the Reentry Employment Opportunities (REO) program that provides grants to nonprofits nationwide to provide workforce training and reentry services to individuals with criminal legal histories as well as placement and onboarding services to employers seeking to hire workers for open positions.
Advocated for FY25 funding in the Commerce, Justice, Science, and Related Agencies appropriations bill for DOJ Bureau of Justice Assistance grant programs, including the Wrongful Conviction Review program for grants to local innocence organizations to exonerate persons who have been wrongfully convicted, and the Kirk Bloodsworth Post-Conviction DNA Testing Grant program that provides states and localities with grants to provide access to post-conviction DNA testing in cases of likely innocence and to review and correct system errors in this area; and forensic science research to validate forensic science techniques to increase their reliability and accuracy at the National Institute of Standards & Technology (NIST) at the Dept. of Commerce.
Provided input on a draft bill (Carla Walker Act) that would create a DOJ grant program to support funding for crime labs to perform Forensic Genetic Genealogy (FGG) testing, as well as input on how to update the Bloodsworth Post-Conviction DNA Testing grant program to reflect the impact of FGG testing and other forensic science advancements on post-conviction case review.
